Wind Energy: Current Status and Potential

 

Today, Moldova does not dispose of any modern wind installations, and there is only some small power wind equipment. In Edinet, the town located 201km north of the Moldova’s capital Chisinau, is installed one wind turbine with height 70m. This turbine pumps daily in the State System of “The Electrical Distribution Networks Northwest” up to 10 thousand KW.

The most suitable locations for wind power installations are Besarabeasca, Zarnesti, Leovo, Ciadyr - Lunga and Cimislia (shown on the map). Wind power: 1,000 MW estimated potential

 

In fact, the scientific researches and measurements revealed that Moldova has some favorable zones for wind installations.  Thus, the measurements taken at a weather station located in the south of the country showed that, at 10m above the ground, the average wind currents are 3-7  m/s. This speed allows efficient operation of modern wind installations. Moreover, the wind speed increases with height and would make more efficient the use of wind installations, at a typical construction height of 60-70 m above the ground.

The wind power density at 50-100m above the ground is 350- 500 W/m2. For rigorous economic analysis it is necessary to perform additional measures of wind energy characteristics in the area for a period of min 12 months. This wind potential could be efficiently exploited by using wind power stations with the capacity of 3-10 MW each.
